Thoughts On An EFL Job Post – Part 7

I’ve omitted details so that this ad is not immediately identifiable. The purpose of this is to share the thoughts of an experienced teacher (me) – who’s found her own jobs before – on a random job ad. Of course you should investigate any opportunity you’re interested in thoroughly yourself – I don’t mean to slam nor endorse this ad…For more advice and examples see the Finding A Job Table Of Contents.

Note that this ad was posted by a recruiter – you need this information for my comments to make sense, and I think that it is rather obvious that the ad comes from Korea so I did not attempt to remove references to Korea.

SALARY: 3.0MIL
DAYS AT WORK: M-F
TEACHING SCHEDULE: 10.00 – 6.00pm [given the details below, I would want to clarify this well, as well as the M-F]AGE OF STUDENTS: Kindy, Elementary, Middle, High, Adults

HOUSING: Single, 32 pyeong, brand new, never been lived in, luxury apartment

SYNOPSIS:
This is a new concept in Korea. It is called and English Apartment.
Basically this is what happens. Koreans buy an apartment and part of the deal is they get free English lessons in the complex.

There are 3 classrooms within the complex and teachers are scheduled with classes between the hours of 10-6pm Mon -Fri. [especially if you are expected to be seen around the complex –see below – I’d want more info on exactly what happens between 10 and 6 – how many classes, if you use a book, how or even if they can divide people by levels. Do people just come and go? Do the students set the course content?]They are also encouraged to be seen around the complex and say hi, how are you etc. to their neighbors. Yes you will be living in one of these apartments and they are fantastic. 32 pyeong! [find out what this means!] Brand new and fully furnished. There is no option for living off site here and part of your job is to be seen outside of the classroom also. There will be two native speakers and 1 gyopo teacher hired here. We would prefer a couple. [Is this because there is only accommodation for two people together? Would a single teacher still get his/her own flat?]

[I have to say this sounds neat. I’m always on the lookout for the “catch” and I suspect there is one, perhaps the requirement about being seen outside the teaching hours…but this sure is intriguing.]
